Elephant Rider

In multiple sermons, Greg Boyd has mentioned author and psychologist Jonathan Haidt who offers the "Elephant and the Rider" as a metaphor for why lasting change is difficult for us. The Rider represents our conscious, rational prefrontal cortex and the Elephant represents our emotional, instinctual limbic system. Even though the Rider provides direction and planning, the massive Elephant brings its own motivation and behavior, often overpowering the Rider’s best made plans. This piece plays with this metaphor and adds some complexity to the environment (snow and ice) and a goal for Jesus followers (taking the narrow path or third way, represented by the technical feature made of pavers).
